Volunteer Diary: "Just enough" is just fine

In life, people often strive to have "more than enough" but we want to "keep up with the Joneses" and have the biggest and most modern home filled with the latest trends in interior design. We want the most fashionable clothes and accessories. We long for the perfect job that will move us up the ladder to success and wealth. We envy those who have the "perfect" healthy, beautiful body.

This past Saturday several of my Downtown Toledo Public Library friends reminded me that satisfaction can be had with having "just enough." Many of the people in need that we meet have enough comfort knowing that they can find a meal, a bed, and a place offering more warmth and security than sleeping on the streets -- places, for instance, like the Cherry St. Mission.

One friend declined an offer for a new shirt & pants because he was "all set" with clothes at the present time.

Another friend said he didn't need any of the socks being handed out by the Hannah's Socks volunteers because he had enough socks for now.

Another friend shared the good news of a new part-time job.

Another friend was thankful that his body was healing enough after a long recovery period that he did not need any more major surgery as of his most recent doctor's appointment!

These people helped remind me that sometimes having "just enough" is really more than enough when we can look on what we do have and can be satisfied.
