This afternoon as we leafed through the mail, Vic and I were surprised to see a letter addressed to Hannah. She was still in school, but being the curious type, we went ahead and opened it. It read:
Dear Hannah,
On behalf of Kohl's Department Stores, Scholarship Management Services and your community, let me be the first of many to say CONGRATULATIONS! You have been selected as a Store-Level winner in the Kohl's Kids Who Care youth volunteer recognition and scholarship program.
You have clearly demonstrated a commitment to transforming your community, and we are proud to recognize your gift of time and talent....
The letter went on to explain that Hannah will receive a certificate of recognition and a $50 Kohl's gift card. She's also being considered for regional and national scholarships worth $1000 and $5000, respectively.
When Hannah got home from school and we shared the news, her first question was, "What did I do?" The affect she's having on the world around her is still too big for her to understand.
Vic and I asked Hannah what she wanted to do with the $50. She said, "I can buy a lot of socks with that money."
We smiled. It took a little convincing, but after a few minutes we persuaded her: Honey, this time, you can pick out something for yourself.
