Our new friends from the AFNORTH International Elementary School in the Netherlands sent four more boxes of socks to Perrysburg today! We are thrilled and grateful. Hannah was so excited and asked if I would take a picture of the pretty boxes. The boxes were wrapped in pink, green and orange paper and beautifully made labels. Hannah said it reminded her of sherbet. Hannah's smile says it all! Thank you very much to the students, their parents and all of the staff at AFNORTH.

Today the Cincinnati office of Hannah's Socks received a visit from Dana Siegel, a member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Clifton. She engaged her fellow churchgoers in an official Hannah's Socks Sock Drive and collected more than 250 pairs of socks as well as more than 100 additional 'clothing essentials' for men, women and children.

Dana says they're going to keep their Socks Box displayed at the church and continue to collect materials for us. Thanks Dana and Immanuel Presbyterian Church for making a difference in the lives of the less fortunate in Cincinnati.

My mailman saw all of us outside on Saturday and said, "Go get Hannah." In the back of his mail truck were 4 packages from the AFNORTH Elementary School in the Netherlands. Hannah said that the boxes looked so pretty all wrapped in yellow and Green paper and decorated with stickers.

The kids at this school worked very hard on this project, led by their teacher Sandra Campbell. All of us at Hannah's Socks are thrilled that they wanted to help Hannah make a difference! The hundreds and hundreds of socks that they sent will help the feet of many homeless men, women and children in the Toledo area. Thank you kids for all of your hard work.

I know I say this a lot, but the need is a year 'round need. The next time you are in a store, please pick up a pair or two. We'll come and get them or you can come by the office and see us.

American Knitting Company sends Hannah's Socks their sock samples every 2-3 months. We just got 2 boxes again from them yesterday! We are so grateful to get their support year 'round! They are from North Carolina and are making a difference in Toledo and Cincinnati, Ohio! It is awesome when the other states reach out with their generosity to help others in need. Thanks to the fine folks at the Zappos.com distribution center in Shepherdsville, KY, who collected more than 500 pairs of socks during a '50s sock hop party. In addition to shipping the socks to Hannah's Socks HQ, the group sent Hannah a goody bag full of cool stuff like a magic 8-ball and a hairbrush along with a note to her to keep up the great job of serving the homeless. My family and I go to Cedar Creek Church on Saturday evenings. The children love "Kid Ventures" and after we've loaded them into the van to head home, they do not stop talking about what they did, what they've learned, and which one of them will remember the bible verse.

Last Saturday the kids were so excited because all three Cedar Creek campuses are getting all of the kids, big and little, involved in making a difference in the lives of the homeless right here in our area. Hannah said, "Mom, all of the Cedar Creek's are collecting socks to help me put socks on my homeless people. This will be gazillion's of socks." Keep in mind that Hannah is 7. Those big brown eyes and her toothless smile along with her big imagination knew that with Cedar Creek's help this would be BIG! Yes, she has in her own mind claimed the homeless population.

As she tries real hard to take care of HER toys she also thinks of the people she helps everyday as HER homeless people. I think it is a good thing to take ownership of whatever you become involved in, so we let her do so. As Vic and I listened to Bill Hybels Saturday evening at Cedar Creek, he spoke of Holy Discontentment. We looked at each other knowingly without speaking a word that homelessness is our family's Holy Discontentment, thanks to Hannah's observation and her heart that cold Thanksgiving morning.

I am thankful to the Three Village Church ladies' bible study for their donation of nearly 50 pairs of socks. As the weather warms, our donations of clothing essential goes down. Most people equate the need for socks as a cold weather need. I did too before I got involved with the homeless population. The donation from these ladies went to a shelter almost immediately. The need is a year round one. The feet of the homeless require socks each and everyday.

Medical experts say that many of the health problems of the homeless are byproducts from life on the streets. The shelters see an abundance of foot problems that range from complications from diabetes to serious fluid retention and lacerations. Putting on a pair of new socks gives them comfort. I've had the privilege of handing out socks to homeless men, women and children. They are always grateful. Their smiles say a lot but their sad eyes tell us that we have more work to do.

We have a new group to celebrate. Brian Goodman of the Western Avenue Family Center in south Toledo called Doris, saying that they provide assistance to about 150 people: 30 children, 60 women, and 60 men. He said the people that they help are destitute. They meet in a former Baptist church, and Wednesday evening is their prayer meeting. My sons Caleb, Connor, and I unknowingly entered during that weekly gathering with about 200 pairs of socks. We sat through the prayer requests, each one prayed for by Chris or Scott.

Then Penny introduced us to the people in attendance. I told them the Hannah's Socks story, and their welcoming response clearly showed their appreciation. As we walked toward the front door, one man stopped us to share an a cappella verse from the hymn "Where He Leads Me, I Will Follow."
