"It is more blessed to give than to receive."
Most of us have heard those words, recorded in the Bible from the lips of Jesus. They express one of the central tenets of authentic Christian faith: generosity.
This trait has been displayed repeatedly since Hannah's Socks officially began, following the path of an inspiring tradition: Mother Teresa of Calcutta founded the Missionaries of Charity to offer generosity to those who need it, saying: "I do what I can, where I am, with what I have;" Bill and Melinda Gates donate millions of dollars toward education and health care around the world; and people upended by natural disasters receive generous assistance to help them rebuild their lives, whether in southeast Asia or America's southern states.
At Hannah's Socks, we have stepped into this tradition of caring and sharing. We are neither global, nor nationwide. We currently serve shelters that help homeless people and victims of abuse in three of Ohio's 88 counties. But like Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King ... I too have a dream today ... a dream of helping more people find warmth in cold conditions ... which will hopefully show others that there are people who care about giving "just because."
